Special thanks to the PE team and our assistant Joe Sibley.
Laia Palau
Captain of Spain's National Women's Basketball Team
Most international medals of any basketball player in Spain (male or female)
Laia Palau is a Spanish basketball player and captain of Spain's National Women's Basketball Team. Over her 20 year career, Laia has played in three different Olympic games and has earned a total of 12 international medals, the most of any Spanish international basketball player (male or female), surpassing Pau Gasol.
Laia's basketball career is built on humility, hard work and effort. The success of Laia and Spain's Women's Basketball Team has increased support and popularity of women's basketball throughout Spain and helped bring a title sponsor (Endesa) to the Women's Basketball League.
Laia has also fought for social change. As captain of the women's team, she is paid the same salary as Rudy Fernandez, the men's captain, however, at the club level there is still a dramatic discrepancy in salaries and there no Women's Basketball merchandise available in stores. "Resistance, keep wanting more and wanting to win," are words spoken by Laia regarding both performance on the basketball court and for equality and equity for women in sport.
